South - eastern Siberia, Baikal region, is rich in reserves of pure water and forests. Irkutsk region is one of the most forested regions in the World. The forest cover of Irkutsk region is 82.6% (for comparison: the average forest cover in the Russian Federation is 45.3%, and in the whole planet it is about 28%). About 12% of the wood reserves of the ripe forests of the Russian Federation are concentrated in the region, total timber stock of Irkutsk region is 8.8 billion m3. The forest for the region is an important ecological, economic and social resource.

23During school hours, the following information will be provided to the students: forests are the wealth of Siberia; the hunting resources of Siberia; the protection of animals in Russia; the possibilities of hunting in Siberia; forest succession and dynamics. You will gain in-depth knowledge of the forest resources of Baikal region, the specifics of their ecology, usage and role as cultural heritage. Also there will be a lot of information about taiga forest ecosystem and ecological problems of Baikal region.

During the practical part the students will study ecology of taiga in natural landscapes. The practice takes place under the direction of a qualified teacher-wildlife biologist in a camp located in the taiga forest more than 100 km from Irkutsk city and 20 km from the coast of Lake Baikal. The nearest settlement is 15 km away. The training base is equipped with everything necessary (heated rooms, classrooms, dining room, kitchen) for a comfortable stay and giving classes in expeditionary conditions. There is always an interpreter and is a threefold organized hot food on the base. At the place of practice there is no telephone connection, no internet. There is the possibility to use traditional banya. You have to have a sleeping bag with you. You need warm clothes for a temperature of 0 ° C.

4During the cultural program of the School a walk along the historical part of Irkutsk city and a trip to Lake Baikal (Tal’tsy Museum of Wooden Architecture (with expositions representing the life, culture and traditions of the indigenous peoples of the Baikal region (Tofs, Evenks, Buryats) and life of Russian settlers in Siberia in 17-20th century), the Baikal Museum in Listvyanka village (with a tour of the unique lake and its inhabitants)) will be provided.

The number of participants is 8-10 persons from the German side and the same number from Russia (with teachers, сook and interpreter).

The successful implementation of the Summer School program will enable closer cooperation between Irkutsk State Agrarian University, DAAD and German universities. We believe, that through further important steps of cooperation the development of bilateral scientific educational programs in the field of natural use is possible.
